Kenai Historical Cabin Park Docent (Guide)
Reports to: Kenai Historic Park Manager
Hours: Approximately up to 24 hours per docent per week, split schedule between (2) docents (Monday – Wednesday and Friday – Sunday)
Dates: May 27 – August 31, 2025
Pay: $15 per hour
Description:
Under the direction of the Kenai Historic Park Manager, this position is responsible for greeting all visitors to the park and conducting tours of the cabins and grounds. The docent will need to demonstrate knowledge of the history of Kenai and the immediate area, as well as the history of the State of Alaska. This is a part-time, seasonal position.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the prompt opening of the park each day and for closing the cabins and the park at the end of each shift.
- Meet, greet, and converse with all visitors in the park.
- Display a knowledge of the history of the Kenai area and construction of the cabins to assist the visitors in knowing more about the history of the area and the purpose of the park.
- Responsible for the safety of the visitors and for their behavior while in the park.
- Responsible for taking care of any problems with the visitors or the contents of the park.
- Responsible for securing and logging any cash donations that are received from visitors.
- Participate in categorizing the artifacts contained in and around the cabins under the direction of Kenai Historical Society Cabin Manager.
- Assist with display projects at the direction of the Cabin Park Managers.
- Social media posts, videos, and marketing related to the park will be asked daily on Facebook and Instagram, and possibly other social media outlets.
- Maintenance of Cabin grounds, as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Hours
The Cabin Park is open Monday-Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10AM-6pm, Sunday 12pm-6pm.
Employee Shift #1: Monday – Wednesday: 9:45 am – 6:15 pm
Employee Shift #2: Friday/Saturday: 9:45 am – 6:15 pm & Sunday: 11:45 am – 6:15 pm
Includes a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrate an understanding of Alaska history, of the Kenai Peninsula, the City of Kenai, and the surrounding areas.
- Indicate a willingness to gain further knowledge through training and outside reading.
- Ability to provide assistance to visitors and the public in a kind and enthusiastic manner.
- Ability to work well with others on various projects.
- Willingness and motivation to learn new skills.
- Willingness to work outside of normal schedule on occasion if needed.
- Must have reliable transportation and mobile device.
- This is a non-smoking, substance-free position, with possible background check.
